Frequently Asked Questions
1. Product Quality & SABS Approval
What does SABS approval mean?
SABS stands for the South African Bureau of Standards. When a product carries the SABS mark, it has been independently tested and certified to meet South African national safety and performance standards. This means the product has been evaluated for electrical safety, durability, and compliance with local regulations — giving you peace of mind that it is safe to use in your home or business.
Do all your products carry SABS approval?
We stock a wide range of SABS-approved products across our Electrical and Lighting ranges. Where SABS approval applies, it is noted on the product listing. If you are unsure whether a specific product is SABS-approved, please contact us before purchasing.
Why should I choose SABS-approved products?
Using non-compliant electrical products can void your insurance, create fire hazards, and result in failed municipal inspections. SABS-approved products ensure compliance with South African regulations and protect your investment.
2. Product Compatibility & Specifications
How do I choose the right solar products for my home?
Choosing the right solar system depends on your daily energy consumption, the number of appliances you want to power, and your budget. As a general guide:
- Step 1 – Calculate your load: List all appliances and their wattage, then estimate daily usage hours.
- Step 2 – Size your inverter: Your inverter must handle your peak simultaneous load (in watts).
- Step 3 – Size your battery bank: Batteries should store enough energy for your required backup hours.
- Step 4 – Size your solar panels: Panels must recharge your batteries within available daylight hours.

What should I look for in an electric fence energizer?
When selecting an energizer for your electric fence, consider the following:
- Output Joules (J): Higher joules = more powerful shock. Residential fences typically need 0.5J–2J; farm/game fences may need 5J+.
- Fence length: Match the energizer's rated fence distance to your perimeter.
- Power source: Choose mains-powered, battery-powered, or solar-powered depending on your site.
- SANS compliance: Ensure the energizer meets SANS 60335-2-76 for safety.
- Alarm output: Many energizers include a fault/alarm output to connect to your security system.

Do smart switches require a neutral wire?
Most smart switches and smart home automation devices do require a neutral wire to function correctly. South African homes built before the 1990s may not have a neutral wire in the switch box — only a live (line) wire is present. Before purchasing, check your existing switch wiring or consult a qualified electrician. Some smart switches are designed to work without a neutral wire, but these are less common. Product listings in our Smart Home Automation collection specify neutral wire requirements where applicable.
Are your products compatible with South African 230V / 50Hz electrical standards?
Yes. All products we stock are selected for compatibility with South Africa's 230V AC, 50Hz electrical standard and use standard South African plug configurations (Type M / BS 546) unless otherwise stated in the product listing.
